The National Economist will provide strategic economic analysis, policy advisory services, and technical expertise to support evidence-based decision-making, programme development, and sustainable development initiatives in Somalia. The position will play a critical role in strengthening UNDP’s contribution to national development priorities by generating high-quality economic research, policy recommendations, and analytical insights that inform government strategies, development programming, and resource mobilization efforts.
Working under the guidance of senior management, the National Economist will monitor and assess macroeconomic trends, development challenges, and emerging opportunities affecting Somalia’s economic transformation. The role will support the formulation of development strategies, policy frameworks, and programmatic interventions aimed at promoting inclusive economic growth, poverty reduction, resilience, institutional development, and sustainable human development.
The incumbent will work closely with government institutions, development partners, financial institutions, civil society organizations, and United Nations agencies to strengthen policy dialogue, foster strategic partnerships, and contribute to the design and implementation of impactful development programmes. The position will also support knowledge generation, economic reporting, advocacy initiatives, and evidence-based planning processes aligned with Somalia’s National Transformation Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As part of UNDP’s multidisciplinary and portfolio-based approach, the National Economist will contribute to cross-sectoral collaboration, innovation, and integrated development solutions that advance economic resilience, inclusive governance, and long-term sustainable development outcomes across Somalia.
