About the Role

The Local Security Assistant will support the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in maintaining safety and operational security for UN personnel and activities in Somalia. The role focuses on security coordination, information gathering, reporting, liaison with government security agencies, and supporting convoy and checkpoint operations.

The selected candidate will work closely with Somali security institutions, police, NISA, and private security providers to strengthen security operations and ensure safe movement of UN staff and assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily UNDSS security operations and coordination.
  • Collect, analyze, and report security information and incidents.
  • Coordinate convoy movements and checkpoint access.
  • Liaise with Somali security authorities and private security actors.
  • Assist in security risk management and operational planning.
  • Prepare security assessments and reports.
  • Maintain communication and situational awareness in high-risk environments.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 3 years of experience
    OR
  • High School Certificate with 6 years of experience.

  • Security Management
  • Criminal Justice
  • Military Studies
  • International Relations
  • Security Studies
  • Peace & Governance

Experience & Skills

  • Experience in security, military, police, or related fields.
  • Somali National with a valid passport.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and internet applications.
  • Experience preparing security reports and assessments.
  • Driving experience, especially armored vehicles, is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of mechanics is desirable.
  • Valid driving license preferred.

Languages

  • Fluent English and Somali (written and spoken).

Preferred Candidates

Candidates with previous experience in:

  • UN agencies
  • International NGOs
  • Military or Police institutions
